Laundry detergent is expensive. For many of our clients, it’s a luxury they cannot often purchase and it’s consistently one of the most requested items in our Personal Essentials Pantry.
Thankfully we have an awesome group of ladies who make laundry soap for us!
They call themselves the “Soap Angels” and once a month they swoop down from Soap Heaven to cook up a batch of homemade laundry soap. The recipe is pretty simple – 4 cups of hot water, 1 bar of Fels-Naptha soap, 1 cup of washing Soda and 1 half cup of Borax yields 10 gallons of laundry detergent. And the cost is quite minimal, too. But the service the Soap Angels provide is invaluable!
The biggest need the Soap Angels have is for empty detergent bottles. Like I said above, the soap recipe makes a LOT of soap – so much soap, in fact, that we run out of bottles to put it in. Many of our clients bring back their empty bottles when they run out of soap, but we still run out of bottles each month.
Maybe you can help us collect more empty bottles. Here are just a few ideas………
- Ask your neighbors to save their empty bottles
- Visit the laundromat to see if they have any empty bottles
- Challenge your kids’ class to a bottle collection competition
- Post something on Facebook so your friends know you’ll take their bottles
Reusing these empty bottles has the added benefit of keeping them out of our landfills.
So, can you help us provide quality homemade detergent to families in need? Feel free to drop them off at the New Hope Resource Center or in the lobby of Morning Star Church, If we work together we could collect enough empty bottles to keep our Soap Angels busy for months!
